Would you consider hosting authors on their blog book tours?

I thought libraries were for readers. I do not understand why the library feels the need to limit avid readers to 5 holds. I live in Southwest Fort Wayne – Aboite Township – you know the newly annexed area of Fort Wayne who had a 57% increase in our property taxes to pay for all the wonderful Fort Wayne services that we have yet to see. I don’t understand why you built a mausaleum in downtown Fort Wayne a year ago and are now cutting your hold services. Our Aboite library is too small to accommodate the area it serves therefore we do not have a large enough selection to choose from on the shelves. I have to order material in to Aboite because they do not have the shelf space to accommodate the number of readers who use the library. The Aboite Library is located in a very inconvenient area if you live north of Illinois Road as it is without having to go there a few times a week just to get around your new hold policy.
I was told by a librarian that it was too expensive for the library to continue using the hold service and that I should consider going to a bookstore and purchasing some of my reading material. I have been a library user my entire life and find these comments rude. I use the library, therefore, I am penalized??

Thank you for your comments. I have been a HUGE fan of the ACPL library system; however, their limit on holds is ridiculous! I have been doing some research on the library’s restrictive and unreasonable holds policy. It is interesting that the library publicized the increase in library fines and the payment for computer printouts (I happen to think these are both reasonable approaches) but I never heard anything about the hold limit changing in the newspaper nor is anything posted on the library’s website. I even looked at the ACPL Board of Trustees minutes and didn’t see where this was even discussed. But they did approve a motion to spend $105,000 on software that would enable them to charge for printouts and $49,000 on a system that would allow credit cards to be used for library parking areas!!!!!!
There were two editorials recently in the Journal Gazette blasting the new holds policy. I think if enough people come forward and protest the library’s unreasonable limit, I think we can get this changed. Perhaps if people contact the library’s director and the Board of Directors for the library (all of their names are posted on the ACPL site), we can get this changed.

I just tried to put items on hold and was told I had reached my limit. What limit? I had not heard that there was a limit on holds. Under the “hold” selection online, there is no mention of a limit. I am frustrated and saddened as this will change my use of the public library. With gas prices as high as they are, we are watching our gas usage and more trips to the library are not included in that. I would suggest that this policy be revisited by the library board. Many will stop using the library and not take the time, as I have, to tell you why.
